Get your fall on!

The dopest (kid-friendly) fall activities in Ottawa.

By Alyssa Dubé

Fall is in full swing, mamas. Whether you’re already sporting your fall wardrobe and chugging pumpkin spice lattes, or you’re still mourning the end of summer beach days, there’s no denying it. Before winter swoops in and makes life more difficult (is there anything harder than putting a snowsuit on a wiggly baby?), let’s make some time to get outside and enjoy the crisp air and gram-worthy foliage, shall we? But what is there for a dope mom and her dope kids to do in Ottawa before snowfall?

Take a hike.

Fall weather is like goldilocks’ porridge; not too hot, not too cold, but juusssttt right. So naturally, it’s the perfect time to get outside with your littles. Whether you’re an avid hiker, or you’re just dying for some fresh air, hit the trails! The Fall Rhapsody in Gatineau Park is famous worldwide, and they have trails for every skill level (check out their recommendations based on difficulty); there are even free shuttles from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau!

Get lost.

Not only are corn and hedge mazes fun for the whole family, they’re also perfect for “accidentally” losing your kiddos and finally getting a moment of peace and quiet (I’m kidding… kind of). Until October 31st check out haunting season at Saunders Farm in Munster, where in addition to 9 hedge mazes they also have over 35 other attractions. Pumpkin Fest at Proulx Farm is also on until the end of the month, with tons of fun fall activities including mazes, face painting, wagon rides and more. If you're looking for something closer to home, Maple Hill Urban Farm has a corn maze and fall festivities right off the hwy in Bells Corners.

Grab a pint.

Beer and babies… name a better duo! We’re so lucky to have some amazing baby and kid-friendly breweries in Ottawa. No matter what corner of the city you’re in, there’s bound to be a brewery nearby pouring delicious seasonal brews. Some certified Dope Moms faves: Dominion City, Calabogie Brewing Co. (Kanata Taproom), Tooth and Nail, Kichesippi Beer Company, Broadhead Brewing Company, and Ridge Rock Brewing Company.

See a good ol’ hockey game.

Do you have a budding hockey fan on your hands? Catch an Ottawa 67s game at TD Place, and make sure you arrive early to take advantage of the family-friendly activities the team sets up before the game. Fill up on hot dogs and cotton candy (a balanced dinner, if you ask me), and make sure you get a photo with their mascot Riley the Racoon.

Trick-or-treat at the Carp Farmers’ Market.

October 26th is the last regular Carp Farmers’ Market of the 2019 season, and it’s their annual Halloween Spook-tacular Market. So dress your kids in their Halloween best, trick-or-treat at the vendor’s booths, and tour their Haunted Barn (if you dare). Supporting local producers AND trick-or-treating in cute costumes? Sign me up!

Do it for the gram.

Apple picking, pumpkin patch, wagon ride… whatever your fall activity of choice, make sure you capture that picture-perfect moment. Dress your babies and toddlers in their cutest fall outfits (bonus points for beanies and plaid), bribe them for smiles if you must, and capture those memories, mama! Where can you find the best backdrops, you ask? Some local faves include Miller’s Farm & Market, Mountain Orchards (they have apple cider donuts!!), Cannamore Orchard, Proulx Farm, and Orleans Fruit Farm.

Last but not least, don’t forget to tag @dopemomsofottawa on Instagram, or ask other mamas in the Facebook group to join in on all the dope fall fun.
